Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test

AUDIT

General

The AUDIT originated from a World Health Organization (WHO) study and has been widely used since 1989. Previous studies have included high, middle, and low socioeconomic status countries, different cultures and languages, different health care systems, and social and political systems. The AUDIT can thus be used with international validity. It consists of 10 questions and is composed of the three main domains: Alcohol Use, Potential Alcohol Dependence, and Experience of Alcohol-Related Harm. On the one hand, these areas can be evaluated individually and, on the other hand, an overall score can be determined.

Operation Area

The AUDIT can be used as a simple and effective method for screening for unhealthy alcohol use. It distinguishes risky or hazardous consumption as well as different forms of alcohol abuse. However, the AUDIT screening is not a diagnostic test. Once harmful alcohol use has been identified, a thorough diagnostic evaluation should be performed by professionals.
